Erode East Bypoll
Election officials and police personnel have seized tokens to be used allegedly for distributing cash to voters from the car of Sarbudeen, who is a treasurer of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) South Union. The seizure was done in Tiruppur district.
Tiruppur is around 60 kilometres away from Erode.
Erode District Collector H Krishnaunni said that they had got information that cash would be distributed using tokens at night.
Around Rs 12 lakh of unaccounted cash has been seized by officials since the declaration of polls in the constituency.
Last month, in a video posted by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai, senior DMK minister KN Nehru was heard speaking to the Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan about distribution of money and gifts.
In other developments, it has been decided that five Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) would be used in each polling booth, in order to accommodate the 77 candidates.
The Union government has sent in additional personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in order to ensure free and fair polling.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
