Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai on Monday (6 February) wrote on Twitter saying that the amount received by the state under the 2023 Railway budget is seven times more than the average received during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) era in 2009-14.

While the average annual allocation to the state during those years was Rs 879 crore, in this year alone, the Modi government had allotted Rs 6080 crore, he said.

He added that work worth Rs 30,961 crore is going on in 27 projects across the state at the moment and 73 railway stations from the state have been selected for the Amrit Bharat programme.

The Amrit Bharat programme is to upgrade 1000 small, yet significant, stations by introducing new amenities and upgrading the existing facilities in a cost-effective manner.

Tenders worth Rs 1896 crore have been awarded under this scheme for work at Rameswaram, Madurai, Katpadi, Chennai Egmore and Kanyakumari.

A study is ongoing at six other stations, viz. Chennai Central, Avadi, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Kumbakonam and Tambaram.

Rs 1057 crore has been sanctioned for nine new railway lines in the state.
