Actors Ajith and Vijay (R).
A fan of actor Ajith lost his life in Chennai, after he fell off a truck while celebrating the release of the movie Thunivu. He was among a group of fans who had got up on a moving truck to celebrate.
In a rare occurrence, this year, both actors Ajith and Vijay have chosen to release their movies on the same date (11 January). However, the clash has moved beyond the box-office and spilt out onto the streets.
Fans of the two actors indulged in ugly fights and tearing of movie posters. Police have had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse them.
While Vijay's Vaarisu is the story of a happy-go-lucky man whose life changes after the demise of his foster father, Thunivu is about a criminal mastermind who commits bank heists across Chennai.
Before the release, there was lot of speculation as to whether Vaarisu would get enough screens because Thunivu's distributor is Red Giant Movies, a company owned by Udhayanidhi Stalin.
Red Giant has been accused of monopolizing the film distribution business in Tamil Nadu and actor Vijay is seen as a future political challenger to Udhayanidhi.
