The Ground Reports Project 2024

Good Morning Dear Readers,

Polls are done. Exit Polls are out. And Swarajya has successfully completed one more edition of its signature '50 Ground Reports' project.

Through these reports, we've tried to bring you perspectives that get lost in the cacophony of the 'mainstream'.

  • Honestly, if not for direct interactions with Meiteis of Manipur, we would've never come across the reality that an entire community hasn't been 'allowed' to vote in any election for more than 3 decades.

  • How the remote border villages of Himachal have embraced the new narrative of being the 'first villages' and not the last ones, thanks to the Vibrant Village Programme.

  • The misconceptions of 'well-governed Odisha' shatter once one travels beyond a few boulevards of Bhubaneshwar and is faced with squalor and extreme destitution. Not to forget the emigration crisis that has left the elderly vulnerable and helpless in the absence of youth.

  • Then, on the other hand, we had the Hridayapath series bringing out stories from relatively unknown parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal, and Assam.

    • Stories of the revival of Sanatan Dharma in the face of predatory proselytisation of evangelists come to the fore in the tribal belts of Chhattisgarh and Tripura.

  • Down south, underdogs like Madhavi Lata against Owaisi, Rajeev Chandrasekhar against Shashi Tharoor, and Sobha Surendran against K C Venugopal — are making the 'right' noise.

  • These and innumerable other insights trickle in only to leave one wondering at the sheer scale of India, her elections, and the diversity of her people.

    • Elections are over.

  • The results will be out on June 4 and a new government will be sworn in.

  • What will remain etched in yours and our memories will be these fascinating stories of the people of India.

  • The success of this project gives us confidence in the modern Indian reader like you. And for us to continue doing it, we need your backing.

If you haven't already contributed, you can do it here. We count on your continued support.

    Until next time,

    — Amar Govindarajan, Anmol Jain, and the entire Swarajya Team
