Assam civil servant Nupur Bora, a 2019-batch ACS officer, has been arrested for alleged corruption linked to illegal land transfers in Barpeta district, officials said on Monday (15 September), the Times of India reported.

Raids by the chief minister’s vigilance cell at two of Bora’s Guwahati apartments unearthed nearly ₹1 crore in cash (some sources also reveal almost 2 crore), along with diamonds and jewellery worth lakhs, said vigilance SP Rosie Kalita.

“The investigation is a work in progress. There are several allegations against the officer. We could seize more cash and other assets by the time the probe ends,” Kalita added.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Bora was being probed for transferring land to “a particular community” and for hoarding wealth disproportionate to her income.

“The government received information that this official was transferring Hindus’ land to another community when she was posted in Barpeta. She has been on our radar for the last six months,” Sarma said. He noted corruption was widespread in the revenue offices of minority-dominated areas.

The inquiry has also focused on properties linked to Bora’s alleged associate, Surajit Deka, in Barpeta. Police searched four premises in all.

The case comes amid Assam’s tougher stance on land transfers in sensitive districts. On 27 August, the cabinet cleared a new SOP requiring Special Branch clearance for all inter-religious land deals, citing demographic and security concerns.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a recent state visit, also warned about threats to Assam’s demography from illegal immigration.

“This is the 25th case registered with the vigilance cell,” Kalita said.
