Amritpal Singh, Leader of 'Waris Punjab De', who had been evading arrest for over a month, was apprehended on Monday.

Singh had hoped to flee the country; however, he was mindful that his wife, Kirandeep Kaur, may be taken into custody by the police in his absence.

According to top sources within the Punjab government, reported NDTV, Kaur, a British citizen currently residing in India, was placed under close police observation since Singh absconded in March during a crackdown.

Kirandeep Kaur arrived in India in February, a week before her wedding, and her visa will expire in July. She faced questioning last month with Amritpal Singh's mother in Amritsar's Jallupur Khera village and was recently stopped at the Amritsar airport while attempting to fly to London.

Amritpal Singh prioritised the safe departure of his wife from the country before his escape, fearing that her arrest and culpability for his flight would occur if he fled first, according to the report.

Singh was arrested in an overnight operation in Rode village, Moga district by the Punjab Police on Monday. He reportedly transferred funds for his operations via his wife and stashed them in the UK.

Kirandeep Kaur, who hails from Jalandhar and has family ties to the UK, revealed in an interview with The Week that she met Amritpal through Instagram and that they visit Punjab every other year.

Days before his supporters attacked Ajnala Police Station to free his aide Toofan Singh, she got married to Amritpal Singh on 11 February.

Singh was apprehended in the birthplace of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a Khalistani terrorist whom he idolised. He is hailed as "Bhindranwale 2.0" by his supporters due to his claim of being a follower of the terrorist.
