Veer Savarkar's grandson, Ranjit Savarkar, said that he “will file an FIR” against Rahul Gandhi “if he doesn’t apologise” for his remarks.
This comes a day after Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Uddhav Thackeray and Sanjay Raut stated that they will not tolerate an insult to V D Savarkar.
During a press conference on 25 March, Rahul Gandhi in response to a question on whether he will apologise for his “Modi surname” remark said: “My name is not Savarkar, it is Gandhi and a Gandhi never offers an apology”.
Ranjit asked that, “Does Rahul Gandhi have any proof to establish V D Savarkar had apologised to the Britishers?”
Savarkar's grandson stated that the Congress leader made false statements about Savarkar repeatedly, which they condemned and reported to the police previously.
Ranjit had once filed a complaint with Maharashtra Police when Rahul made a similar statement. He had also filed a case in Bhoiwada Court five years ago, where the court instructed the police to send a notice to Rahul.
According to Ranjit, Bal Thackeray, Uddhav Thackeray and some Congress leaders in Maharashtra always respected Savarkar. Several Congress leaders in Maharashtra were also not pleased with Gandhi’s “childish” anti-Savarkar comment, he added.
Sanjay Raut also plans to meet Rahul Gandhi in Delhi to advise him against commenting on Savarkar. “The statement is wrong. Rahulji is a Gandhi but there is no need to drag Savarkar in all this. Savarkar is an inspiration for us,” said Raut.
