PM Modi in Manipur
A new dawn of hope and trust is rising in Manipur, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he arrived in the state on Saturday (13 September) on his first visit since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023.
Addressing a gathering in Manipur's Churachandpur, PM Modi said he met families living in relief camps and stressed that peace was vital for Manipur’s development.
"The land of Manipur is a land of hope and aspiration. Unfortunately, violence had cast its shadow on this beautiful region. A short while ago, I met those affected who are living in relief camps. After meeting them, I can say with confidence that a new dawn of hope and trust is rising in Manipur," PM Modi said.
"For development to take root anywhere, peace is essential," he added.
The ethnic clashes between the valley-dominant Meitei community and the Kuki tribes, who are dominant in some hill areas of Manipur, began in May 2023.
The unrest, rooted in disputes over land rights and political representation, has left more than 250 people dead and displaced over 50,000.
"I appeal to you to move forward on the path of peace and make the future of your children better. I promise I am with you. The Government of India is with you. The government is making efforts to bring life back on track. The government is providing houses to those who have become homeless. The government is working to remove the concerns of the people," the Prime Minister was quoted as saying by NDTV.
PM Modi also laid the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore at Churachandpur.
The projects include Manipur Urban Roads, drainage and asset management improvement project worth over Rs 3,600 crore; 5 National Highway projects worth more than Rs 2,500 crore; Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project, Working Women Hostels at 9 locations, among others.
