Karnataka 2023: Congress Promises To Restore 4 Per Cent Muslim Quota If It Wins Election

Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar said that if his party wins the upcoming assembly elections, it would cancel the scrapping of the 4 per cent Muslim quota by the current government.

In March, the Karnataka government decided to eliminate the four per cent quota for minorities and include it in the existing quota of the two dominant communities of the poll-bound state.

The 4 per cent reservation previously given to Muslims under the 2B classification of the OBC category would now be divided into two equal parts and added to the existing quota of Vokkaligas and Lingayats.

During an interview with ANI on 7 April, Shivakumar said that the Congress party had raised its two lists without any complications, while the BJP could not yet do so. He further added that more lists would be released and that as soon as the Congress government comes into power, it would cancel the reservation issue and safeguard the minority interest.

So far Congress has declared 166 candidates, backing Darshan Puttannaiah from Melukote constituency, whereas JD(S) has released one list of 93 candidates for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly Election 2023.

The ruling BJP in Karnataka, too, on Tuesday (11 April) announced its first list of candidates for 189 constituencies for the state election.
