Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has moved the Supreme Court challenging the 7 July verdict of the Gujarat High Court through which his revision plea was dismissed and the High Court refused to stay his conviction in the Modi surname matter.
The criminal defamation case was filed subsequent to Gandhi’s remark in 2019 Lok Sabha campaign stated, “Why do all thieves have the same surname?”
While Gandhi argued that there was no malafide intention on his part while making the statement.
Previously, on 23 March 2023 the Surat Court had convicted Gandhi and sentenced him to two-year imprisonment, following which he was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha.
