In a bold proclamation, Telangana's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit chief, G Kishan Reddy, declared on Monday that the party plans to rename Hyderabad as 'Bhagyanagar' if it assumes power in the state.

Citing examples of city name changes in other states, Reddy emphasised the BJP's commitment to the renaming initiative during an interview with ANI.

Drawing parallels with the renaming of cities such as Chennai, Kolkata, and Mumbai, Reddy highlighted the BJP's previous efforts, stating, "Madras was renamed to Chennai, Calcutta was renamed to Kolkata, Bombay was renamed to Mumbai, and we renamed Rajpath to Kartavya Path."

He asserted that Hyderabad, having been renamed during the Nizam rule, should revert to its original name, Bhagyanagar, once the BJP is in power.

Adityanath asserted that Hyderabad would be renamed Bhagyanagar if the BJP emerged victorious. He criticised the Congress for its role in creating Hyderabad and emphasised the BJP's intent to restore the city's historical name.

Yogi Adityanath's government in Uttar Pradesh has been notable for renaming cities, with Allahabad becoming Prayagraj and Faizabad transformed into Ayodhya.

Additionally, there are proposals to rename Aligarh as Harigarh, Mainpuri as Mayan Nagar, Firozabad as Chandra Nagar, and Mirzapur as Vidhya Dham.

The political landscape in Telangana takes an interesting turn as the BJP announces its intention to rename Hyderabad to 'Bhagyanagar' if elected to power in the state.
