In a bid to bolster preparations for the the state assembly polls later this year, the BJP has called a meeting of the central election committee at the party's Delhi headquarters this evening.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party president JP Nadda, and other members of the central election panel will attend the meeting.

The central election committee is the top decision making body of the BJP for finalising candidates and laying down poll strategies.

It is rare for the panel to meet before elections are announced, so this meeting indicates the BJP's seriousness in not taking any chances, especially after its setback in the Karnataka election earlier this year, NDTV reported.

The upcoming Assembly polls present a significant challenge for the BJP.

The five states going to polls are Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana.

Among these, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Telangana are currently ruled by the Opposition, and the BJP is eyeing electoral victory in these states.

The MNF criticised the BJP's handling of the Manipur situation, highlighting the differences within the alliance. Similarly, in Madhya Pradesh, which is currently ruled by the BJP, a closely contested election with Congress seems to be on the horizon.

These Assembly polls hold great significance as they take place just months before the general election next year.

They will set the tone for the major battle between the incumbent BJP and the joint Opposition bloc called I.N.D.I.A.

The BJP central election committee meeting will focus on constituencies where the party is weak, NDTV reported citing party sources.

The aim of the meeting is to identify potential candidates for these seats well in advance, allowing them ample time to prepare for the elections.

The meeting will also address crucial election issues in these states, as well as strategies to counter the Congress's promises and other matters related to the upcoming polls, the sources added.
