Indian army encounter

The crisis in Pulwama district of Kashmir is a telling comment on the leadership crisis in the political class.

The separatists are holding Pampore and its adjoining areas in Pulwama district to ransom and the politicians, indulging in all kinds of debate in Delhi, do not seem to realize the damage that such disdain can cause to the Indian Union.

There is a general shutdown in the area over the killing of three foreign militants in a 48-hour gunfight at Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) building in Sempora, Pampore in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

All the shops and business establishments had been closed while police and CRPF forces were deployed in Namlabal, Kadlabal, Drangbal and Frestabal areas of Pampore. All business establishments remained closed and public transport was off the roads.

Hurriyat Conference had called for funeral prayers in absentia for the slain militants in Pampore town. Despite curfew and other restrictions in Pampore, people in large numbers including Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League leader, Abdul Ahad Parra participated in the funeral. They raised high-pitched anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.

The authorities have arrested the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Secretary General Shabbir Ahmed Shah and other Hurriyat leaders.

Pulwama has been a hub of terrorism. Kashmiri experts believe that Pulwama has become Kashmir’s new-age militant factory. According to security forces, this is due to the topography. Being a centrally placed district, it acts as a transient spot for rebels to take refuge.

The burden of abandoning Pulwama begins with PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti. When she launched PDP to lift her father’s political career, Pulwama district supported her. PDP’s youth president Wahid Parra is from Pulwama.

The politicians who are debating and taking out street protests over the issue of what is ‘national’ and what is ‘anti-national’ should first check in at Pampore. They are all talking in such high-pitched voices that nothing is making sense. A political leadership is needed to prepare India and preserve its integrity.
