Addressing a press conference at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national headquarters, senior MP Ravi Shankar Prasad today (12 September) responded to remarks made by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Higher Education minister K Ponmudy saying that the purpose of the I.N.D.I.A alliance was to oppose Sanatana Dharma.

He said, "DMK Education Minister Ponmudy's remark has come to light. There is a saying in English 'The cat is out of the bag'.

"What they thought has become clear. INDIA alliance has been formed to oppose and finish Sanatana Dharma...He said this at the same 'anti-Sanatana Dharma' event where CM Stalin's son compared Sanatana to dengue, malaria & A Raja called it "worse than AIDS"...Their hidden agenda is to do vote bank politics by opposing Sanatana Dharma...

"I ask Congress party and this alliance - Do they have the right to criticise deities of some other faith? Do they have the courage? Can they do it?...They stay silent on other religions but openly oppose Sanatana," reported ANI.

He also questioned Congress leader Sonia Gandhi for not speaking up on the issue and said that her silence is an indication of approval.

In a video clip that went viral yesterday (11 September), Ponmudy was heard saying, "Through newspapers, through media, our ideology to oppose Sanatana, I.N.D.I.A, all our friends present here have said, this I.N.D.I.A alliance has been made to oppose Sanatana.

"The parties may have differences of opinion but with regards to opposing Sanatana Dharma, there is no difference of opinion.

"All those in the alliance support establishing equality, saving minorities, saving equality among men and women. The purpose of this I.N.D.I.A alliance, created by 26 parties today, is to create social consciousness on these issues.

"All of you who have come here, however much we do in a conference, only when we win in politics, will be able to do this."
