The Bharatiya Janata Party has slammed Congress leader Jairam Ramesh for calling article criticising Mahatma Gandhi for prioritising Indian independence over British war interests a 'reality check'.

In a tweet on Saturday (17 June), Ramesh quote tweeted a tweet by Daniel Markey that had the link of an article written by him in American magazine Foreign Affairs.

The article titled "India as it is" criticised Mahatma Gandhi for "prioritizing India’s struggle for freedom" against the British war interests.

"Yet again and again, India has disappointed American hopes. Gandhi, for example, frustrated Roosevelt by prioritizing India’s struggle for freedom against the British Empire over the war against imperial Japan and Nazi Germany," the article said.

In the article, Markey also alleged that India's status as democracy ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to the power has "become increasingly suspect".

"The “world’s largest democracy” has seen an upsurge in violence directed at its Muslim minority, often whipped up by prominent politicians. It is trying to strip citizenship from millions of Muslim residents. It is muzzling the press and silencing opposition figures," Markey claimed in the article.

Quote tweeting Markey's post, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, "Of course the Indian ruling establishment will not like it but the article is a reality check that cannot be wished away".

Responding to Ramesh's tweet, BJP leader Anil Antony said, "One of the gems in the article Congress’s communication head Jairam Rames endorses and brands as a reality check the ruling establishment would not like".

"Blind hatred towards the BJP and the Prime Minister has clearly and completely eroded the last vestiges of national sentiments , patriotism and common sense from the current Congress leadership," he added.
