On Wednesday (6 September), the Uttar Pradesh police registered an FIR against DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Congress leader Priyank Kharge, son of Congress President Malikarjun Kharge, on charges of causing offense to religious sentiments.

The FIR was initiated following a complaint by lawyers Harsh Gupta and Ram Singh Lodhi, who drew attention to media reports indicating that Stalin's comments had caused emotional distress.

Udhayanidhi Stalin is facing legal action for advocating the eradication of Sanatana Dharma, while Kharge is implicated for supporting his statement.

These individuals have been charged under sections 295 A, which pertains to deliberate and malicious acts aimed at outraging religious feelings, and 153 A, which involves promoting enmity between different religious groups, according to the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

During an event in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, Udhayanidhi Stalin drew controversy by comparing Sanatan Dharma to diseases like dengue and malaria.

This statement generated strong reactions from various political parties, notably the Bhartiya Janata Party, which called on the Congress to condemn Udhayanidhi's remarks.
