Congress MLA Mamman Khan

A Congress MLA from Haryana, Mamman Khan, has been arrested in connection with the communal violence that took place in Nuh on 31 July.

Khan, the MLA from Ferozepur Jhirka in Haryana, has been named as an accused in one of the First Information Reports filed in the state.

The Congress MLA was questioned by the Nuh Police last week. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

It should be noted that out of the 52 individuals named in the FIR, 42 have been arrested, while one is currently out on bail.

Mamman Khan has been implicated in the case with "ample evidence" against him, NDTV reported citing police sources.

The Haryana government has reportedly informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the police possess phone call records and other crucial evidence related to the case.

During court proceedings, the state's Additional Advocate General, Deepak Sabharwal, revealed that Mamman Khan was officially named as an accused on 4 September.

The MLA filed an appeal to the court on Tuesday, seeking protection from arrest and claiming that he was being falsely accused in the case.

Khan stated that he was not present in Nuh on the day the violence occurred. According to the MLA's lawyer, he was unaware of being named in the FIR until recently.

Justice Vikas Bahl will hear the case on 19 October.

Earlier on 31 July, violence erupted in Nuh during a procession organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, resulting in the deaths of six individuals.

The Haryana MLA has pleaded that all cases regarding the violence in Nuh be transferred to a special investigation team.

The government told the court that the team has been already formed.

The Nuh Police had previously asked the MLA twice to participate in the investigation, but he failed to appear.

On 31 August, he did not come for questioning, citing viral fever as the reason.

In his petition, Khan stated that he was at his Gurugram home from 26 July to 1 August and not in Nuh. However, the government's counsel, as reported by PTI, argued that the evidence was against Khan, including call detail records, location tracking through a phone tower, a statement from the MLA's personal security officer, and other evidence that indicated the claim was false.

According to the state counsel, Taufiq, a co-accused who was arrested on 9 September, has also named Khan in the case.

The counsel stated that there were phone calls made between them on 29 and 30 July, just one day before the outbreak of violence.
