Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of Kerala
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan opposed the Central government's plan to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country by way of a resolution moved in the state assembly on Tuesday (8 August).
The Kerala Legislative Assembly has passed the resolution unanimously.
Following the Chief Minister's resolution, the Congress-led opposition UDF suggested several amendments and modifications, showing support for the left government's action.
Vijayan described the Centre's decision to introduce the UCC as "unilateral and hasty." He said the Kerala Legislative Assembly was concerned and dismayed by the move.
The CPI(M)-led government's decision to oppose the UCC aligns with the ongoing campaign against it by the ruling left, the opposition UDF, and various religious organisations in Kerala.
Recently, both fronts held separate seminars in Kozhikode to voice their opposition against the UCC. These seminars saw the participation of representatives from various religious outfits.
The Law Commission of India received public submissions last month after it had sought suggestions on the implementation of the UCC in the country.
