Leena Manimekalai’s 'Kaali' Poster Tweet Withheld Over Allegations Of Hurting Religious Sentiments
Tweet (now withheld) sharing the controversial poster of the movie 'Kaali'
Social media platform Twitter has pulled down filmmaker Leena Manimekalai's tweet about her documentary 'Kaali', which contained a poster depicting highly revered Goddess Kaali smoking and holding an LGTBQ flag.
The misrepresentation of Goddess Kaali drew sharp reactions from the Hindu community all over the world.
Acting on the government’s request Twitter withheld Manimekalai's tweet that announced the screening of her movie at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, as part of the 'Under the Tent' project.
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa had urged the Canadian authorities to take down all 'provocative material' related to the film after it received complaints from leaders of the Hindu community in Canada about the 'disrespectful depiction' of Hindu gods.
Responding to the complaints Aga Khan Museum issued an apology for "inadvertently causing offence" to members of the Hindu community and assured them that the offensive presentation would no longer be shown at the Museum.
The movie embroiled in controversy was part of 18 short videos from the ‘Under the Tent’ project.
On Tuesday, the Delhi Police and the Uttar Pradesh Police filed separate FIRs against Manimekalai over the filmmaker hurting religious sentiments.
