On Thursday, Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of the AIMIM, criticised the BJP for carrying out encounters "under the guise of religion."

He questioned whether the individuals responsible for burning two young people alive in Haryana would also be subjected to a similar encounter.

"Whose government is in power in Haryana? Are houses not being bulldozed? Are encounters not done by firing bullets?... will you shoot at those who killed Junaid and Naseer?" he asked.

During a gathering in Nizamabad, Telangana, Owaisi was referring to the killing of Junaid (35) and Naseer (27), both residents of Ghatmika village of Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, in Haryana earlier this year.

The families of the deceased had alleged that the two were beaten and murdered by members of Bajrang Dal and mainly a man named Monu Manesar.

Junaid, reportedly, had five cases of cow smuggling and slaughter against him at Firozepur Jhirka police station of Haryana’s Nuh district.

"... you do encounter in the name of religion. Can you eliminate the killers of Junaid and Naseer? You will not do. So far, one has been caught and nine disappeared," Owaisi said.

He criticised the UP police for killing Atiq Ahmed's son in a gunfight, claiming it was tearing apart the rule of law with such encounters.

"You want to do an encounter of the Constitution. You want to weaken the rule of law. Then what the courts, CrPC, IPC, judges, public prosecutor are for?" the AIMIM leader questioned.

"If you decide that we will do justice with bullets, then close down courts. What will judges do? Rule of law should prevail... This is the work of court. Not yours. You nab the criminal. You get punishment for a criminal," he added.

Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and another accused, Ghulam, were killed in a morning encounter in Jhansi on Thursday. Both of them were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case. Each of them carried a reward of Rupees five lakhs.
