In the midst of a political uproar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Sharad Pawar, has come under scrutiny for his remarks critiquing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stance on Israel's conflict with the terrorist organisation Hamas.
In response to Pawar's comments, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma offered an unconventional retort, suggesting that Pawar might send his daughter, Supriya Sule, to Gaza to support Hamas.
This controversy emerged against the backdrop of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing solidarity with Israel over the rocket strikes launched by Hamas.
He conveyed India's condolences to the innocent victims and their families and expressed support for Israel during this challenging period.
The debate surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict escalated on Wednesday (18 October), with leaders from various political parties expressing differing viewpoints.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal also voiced his dismay over Pawar's statements, emphasising the importance of condemning terrorism on a global scale.
Goyal highlighted that Pawar had held significant government positions during critical security incidents, questioning the casualness of his views on terrorism.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also responded to Pawar's remarks, reaffirming India's consistent stance against terrorism and supporting the condemnation of violence against innocent civilians.
Fadnavis pointed out that while India has maintained its position on the Israel-Palestine dispute, it has consistently opposed terrorism in all its forms and against any perpetrators.
He urged Pawar to align his stance with the global condemnation of terrorism, particularly in the context of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
In a gathering of party members in Mumbai, Sharad Pawar had previously remarked on the differing positions of past Indian Prime Ministers in supporting Palestine and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's alignment with Israel in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
