The Supreme Court of India.
A special bench of the Supreme Court comprising of justices Surya Kant and J B Pardiwala today (19 July) heard Nupur Sharma’s petition to revive her earlier petition, at length.
In an exhaustive order passed by the court, it has issued notices to the respondents which comprise the Union of India and several states which have registered FIRs against Sharma in relation to a content of a news channel telecast.
The court has categorically recognised that it is impossible for Sharma to avail of remedies in different high courts due to the continuous life-threatening events. It has also taken note of the videos circulated by the Khadim Salman Chisti and several others, threatening to behead Sharma.
Appearing for Sharma, senior advocate Maninder Singh submitted that Sharma apprehends immediate arrest.
The court has given interim protection to Sharma and has stated that no coercive action should be taken against Sharma during the course of proceedings in the Supreme Court. Additionally, the court has also protected Sharma from any future FIRs/complaints in relation to the TV telecast dated 26 May 2022.
The court has now listed the matter for 10 August 2022.
