The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has started a campaign to remove Governor RN Ravi. It has decided to take a delegation to the President and submit a memorandum signed by all like-minded parties in the state.

According to the DMK, the Governor has been exceeding his brief and making statements that are against the Constitution.

Recently, in a joint statement, leaders of 11 political parties, like TR Baalu of the DMK, K S Alagiri of the Congress and Thirumavalavan of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), had objected to a statement by the Governor saying that “every country is dependent on one religion and India was no exception to the rule.”

They said that these statements could only impress the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and if Ravi wanted to do so, he should resign from his position as these go against the Constitution.

Governor Ravi has been critical of the DMK government on a variety of issues, including the Coimbatore blast case. While speaking at an event in Coimbatore, he said that he couldn’t understand the reason for the delay in handing over the probe to the National Investigation agency (NIA).

Prior to this, he was criticised for his statements on Thirukkural and Sanatana Dharma. The DMK government has been at loggerheads with him on the issue of the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) and appointment of Vice-Chancellors to state universities.

The campaign to remove the Tamil Nadu Governor comes amidst the clash between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government and Governor Arif Mohammad Khan in Kerala.
