The union government has ordered the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to probe the Coimbatore cylinder blast case after receiving a recommendation from the Tamil Nadu government.

An order to this effect was issued by the Counter-Terrorism and Counter- Radicalization (CTCR) Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Subsequently, the Chennai office of NIA registered a First Information Report (FIR) in the case.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had decided to recommend the transfer of the probe to the NIA after mounting pressure from the opposition, especially by state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), K Annamalai.

The Director General of Police (DGP) C Sylendra Babu promised full cooperation to the NIA officers in carrying out the probe. He said that the documents and evidence gathered so far will be handed over soon.

Till the time of the NIA takeover, the Tamil Nadu police had arrested six associates of the deceased Jameesha Mubeen and recovered around 75 kg of explosives from Mubeen’s residence.
