Ghulam Nabi Azad, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and leader of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party, stated on Sunday (6 August) that those opposing the abrogation of Article 370 lack knowledge about the history and geography of the Union territory.
Azad's statement came amid the Supreme Court hearing on a series of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the government's decision on 5 August 2019 to scrap the special status of the erstwhile state guaranteed under Article 370.
During an interview with news agency ANI in J&K's Doda, Azad indirectly criticised regional parties without explicitly mentioning them.
According to the former Congress leader, those opposing the revocation of Article 370 in the Supreme Court are "ignorant of the situation on the ground, as well as the history and geography of Jammu and Kashmir".
"Article 370 was not meant for any particular area, province or religion but was equally beneficial to all," the former Congress leader said, reports ANI.
Expressing full faith in the Supreme Court, the former Congress leader stated that he believe the court will thoroughly examine all aspects of the abrogation of Article 370.
Earlier in an official release, the BJP stated that the abrogation of Article 370 has resulted in peace, development, and prosperity for Jammu and Kashmir.
On the fourth anniversary of the revocation of Article 370, former J&K chief minister and People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief, Mehbooba Mufti, claimed that she, along with other senior party leaders, was placed under "house arrest".
