New High Of 6,000 Covid-19 Cases Over 24 Hours; Worrying Trend Prompts High-Level Preparedness Review

India recorded a concerning surge in daily Covid-19 cases on Friday (7 April), with an addition of 6,050 cases, marking a 13 per cent increase from 5,335 cases the previous day.

This is the first time since 16 September last year that daily cases have surpassed the 6,000 mark.

The Health Minister, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, has organised a review meeting Friday afternoon with all state and Union territory health ministers to assess the state of preparedness in light of the increase in infections.

The country's death toll reached 530,943 with 14 new deaths reported, as per the latest Health Ministry data.


Active cases in the country total 25,587, with a daily positivity rate of 3.39 per cent, which indicates the spread of infection.

India's Covid-19 cases are at 4.47 crore, with active cases accounting for 0.06 per cent of total infections and a recovery rate of 98.75 per cent, as stated on the Health Ministry website.

The Health Minister has assured that the government is prepared to handle a surge in infections, with ICU beds, oxygen supply, and critical care arrangements in place, along with a weekly review of preparedness.
