The Government of India is tapping top academic institutes — the various Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru — to strengthen the research ecosystem within the country.

The establishment of research parks at IITs in eight cities — Chennai, Mumbai, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Gandhinagar — and IISc Bengaluru had already been sanctioned by the government, revealed Dr Subhas Sarkar, the Minister of State for Education, in a written reply Monday (7 August) in the Lok Sabha.

Currently, the research parks at IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Delhi are operational, while the others are said to be in the advanced stages of completion.

Top-tier higher educational institutes are suitable sites for research parks.

These parks have key objectives, such as to foster research collaboration with leading industry players, promote entrepreneurship as well as incubation for students, and build strong academic partnerships.

Additionally, research parks can help facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise between academia and industry.
