Four militants were eliminated during a night-long operation at Shindra Top in the Surankote area of Poonch, thanks to a joint effort by the Indian Army and the Jammu Kashmir (J&K) Police.

The operation, named Trinetra-II, was launched based on specific inputs on Monday (17 July). Contact with the militants was established in the evening, leading to a joint search and cordon operation in the area.

During the exchange of fire that lasted throughout the night, all four militants were killed. However, their identities are yet to be determined. The security forces recovered four AK rifles, two pistols, and other materials from the militants.

The successful operation brings the total number of militants eliminated by the Army and police to six.

Earlier on Monday, two infiltrators were killed as the security forces foiled a major infiltration attempt in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch, across the Line of Control (LoC).

Later, one militant's body was recovered from the site, along with an AK 74 rifle, a magazine, 11 rounds, and other supplies. The infiltration attempt was aimed at disturbing peace in the Poonch district.

In response to the ambush on the Bhimber Gali-Surankote Road on 20 April and the terror incident at Rajouri on 5 May, where 10 soldiers were killed by militants, the Army and police have increased vigilance and strengthened the counter-insurgency grid.

Recently, there have been attempts to revive militancy in Poonch and the adjoining Rajouri district by terrorist groups from across the LoC. The Army and police have successfully thwarted several infiltration attempts by militants in these border districts.

During an intelligence-based operation called Resham on 24 June, the Army and J&K Police prevented an infiltration attempt from the Pakistan side in the Krishna Ghati area along the LoC. Three militants were shot at, and one soldier was injured during the exchange of fire. The militants were seen falling near the LoC.

Before that, a major infiltration bid was foiled by security forces in Poonch. Among other things, a large quantity of arms and ammunition were seized. The infiltrating militants, however, managed to escape, leaving behind an AK 74 rifle and ammunition, including steel core bullets.

On 31 May, the Army and J&K Police successfully apprehended three local terrorists in the Khari area of the Poonch district. This operation foiled a major attempt to smuggle a significant amount of arms, ammunition, explosives, and narcotics from across the LoC.

During the exchange of fire with the security forces, one of the captured infiltrators, Mohammad Farooq, 26, from Karmara village, sustained a bullet injury in his left leg and had to be hospitalised.

The other two militants, Mohammad Riaz, 23, and Mohammad Zubair, 22, were also from Karmara.

The security forces discovered a cache of weapons and illegal substances during their operation.

Among the items seized were an AK 56 rifle with a magazine and 10 rounds, two pistols with four magazines and 70 rounds, six grenades, a 10-kg improvised explosive device made from a pressure cooker, and 20 packets of heroin.
