Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted about "the distressing video" of sexual violence that surfaced yesterday and showed sympathy to the two women who were subjected to this "deeply disrespectful and inhumane act".
He informed that taking a Suo-moto cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning (20 July).
Singh also said that his government is "considering the possibility of capital punishment" and a thorough investigation is currently underway.
The Manipur CM pledged to ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators and made it clear that there is absolutely no place for such heinous acts in our society.
The alleged mastermind behind the heinous act was arrested from Thoubal district, as he was prominently seen in the 26-second video clip that circulated widely.
Prior to this arrest, the police had issued a statement on Wednesday, announcing the registration of a case at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district.
The case encompassed charges of abduction, gang rape, and murder, targeting unknown armed miscreants. The authorities assured that they were making all-out efforts to swiftly apprehend all those responsible for this atrocious crime.
