Tamil Nadu: Section 144 Imposed In Madurai Ahead Of Hindu Munnani’s Protest In Tiruparankundram

A day before the Hindu Munnani’s protest against the demand by some Muslim groups to allow animal sacrifice at the Sikandar dargah, located on the Tirupurankundram hill, the Madurai district administration has imposed Section 144 of the CrPC.

Under this section, protests and public demonstrations have been banned and action would be taken against those violating the order.

The Tiruparankundram hill is one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga in Tamil Nadu and according to a Privy Council judgement, it belongs to the temple. Hindus believe that not a drop of blood should be spilt on the hill. 

The matter took another turn after the visit of K Navas Kani, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MP from Ramanathapuram. He stated that the dargah was Waqf property and also posted pictures of a group of people consuming non vegetarian food on the hill. He said that according to the police commissioner, there was no ban on consumption of cooked non-vegetarian food.

The Munnani has however indicated that it would defy the ban and go ahead with the protest as planned.
