Enforcement Directorate (Representative Image)
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has written to the state government asking for details about the mining and sale of river sand since April 2021, according to a report by The Hindu.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government had come to power in the state in May 2021.
This comes days after the ED conducted raids across the state in sand mining yards, offices of the Water Resources department and premises of businessmen like S Ramachandran, K Rathinam, Karikalan and an auditor P Shanmugaraj.
In a statement issued after the raids, the ED stated, "During the search incriminating documents including diaries, bogus fake sale receipts with counterfeit QR code were found suggestive of illegal sand sales. Evidences of bogus transactions, benami companies were found.
"During the search, Rs. 12.82 Crore was put under freeze and unaccounted cash for Rs. 2.33 Crore was seized along with gold weighing 1024.6 grams worth Rs 56.86 Lakh."
