Elon Musk on Sunday (18 December) launched a poll to seek Tweeple's opinion on whether he should step down as head of Twitter.

The tech billionaire has pledged that he will abide by the results of the poll.

"Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll," Musk tweeted.

In a follow up tweet, Musk warned, “As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it".

Voting is ongoing for the poll which is expected to end in few hours.

In reply to a tweet, Musk said, "The question is not finding a CEO, the question is finding a CEO who can keep Twitter alive".

Replying to a post that he already "has the CEO picked out", Musk responded, "No one wants the job who can actually keep Twitter alive. There is no successor".

Last week, Musk had suspended Twitter accounts of several high-profile US journalists, claiming that the reporters violated a recently implemented policy on sharing location information.

Among those removed from the platform were Ryan Mac of the New York Times, Donie O’Sullivan of CNN, and Drew Harwell of the Washington Post.

The suspensions came after controversy surrounding the deletion of ElonJet, an account created by Jack Sweeney, a US student, that was sharing publicly available data on the location of Musk’s private jet.

Later, Musk reinstated the journalists' accounts after a poll.
