The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly received and laid the report concerning the 1980 Moradabad riots on Tuesday (8 August).

Suresh Kumar Khanna, the State Parliamentary Affairs Minister, formally presented the report which pertains to the Moradabad riots that resulted in the tragic loss of at least 83 lives.

Although the specific contents of the report have not yet been disclosed by the government, inside sources have indicated that a leader affiliated with the Muslim League was held responsible for the unrest that transpired in Moradabad between August and November of 1980. The report is believed to have absolved the UP Police from any blame.

Addressing the issue, UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya noted that the report had been concealed until now, and the present BJP-led government has brought it before the state Assembly.

Maurya pressed for transparency and the revelation of actualities. He stressed the importance of identifying those who incited and protected the rioters, asserting that the report contains this essential information.

Reflecting on the events, 54 year-old Maurya conveyed that it is imperative for the truth to emerge regarding who prompted the riots and who provided cover for the perpetrators.

The 1980 Moradabad riots commenced on 3 August during Eid prayers. The Uttar Pradesh government had previously granted ex-gratia payments to the families of those who lost their lives in the turmoil.
