At the Satish Dhawan Space Centre inSriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)- C38 carrying 31 satellites into orbit.

The total weight all the satellites were 955 kilogrammes (kg), the bulk of which was the 712 kg Cartosat- 2 series satellite, a dedicated satellite for the defence forces.

The Carotsat- 2 series satellite is a remote sensing satellite with the objective of producing high-resolution spot imagery.

The previous in the series was instrumental in the surgical strikes carried out on seven terror launch pads across the Line of Control. This satellite is capable of spotting resolutions of 0.6 m, a step up from the previous 0.8 m.

This is the fortieth flight of the PSLV and 17th flight in the ‘XL’ configuration.

The previous flight was the record breaking PSLV-C37 launch, which successfully carried and deployed a record 104 satellites in sun-synchronous orbit.

The next scheduled launch is the PSLV-C39 and is set to take place in August 2017.
