Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the leader of the opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari announced on Monday (28 April) that the rebuilding and refurbishment of temples damaged in the riots in Murshidabad district would begin on Akshaya Tritiya.
As per Indian Express, Adhikari asserted that all necessary rituals would be conducted during the "purification" process of these temples. This year, Akshaya Tritiya will be observed on 30 April.
“At present, these temples bear the marks of heinous, condemnable, and barbaric assaults by jihadis,” Adhikari asserted, claiming that a “total of nine temples were attacked and damaged” in the violence against the Waqf Amendment Act.
The BJP leader denied accepting any financial assistance from the 'Hindu-opposing Mamata Banerjee government' and reiterated that all expenses for the temple repairs would be borne by Hindus only.
Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president, Sukanta Majumdar, has also expressed his intention to visit the temples in the district that were damaged by violence against Hindus.
During the second week of April, protests over the Waqf law led to violence in several regions of Murshidabad, resulting in the death of three individuals.
Numerous residences and businesses were pillaged, leading to a multitude of individuals seeking refuge in relief camps located in the nearby area of Malda.
