Narendra Modi and Donald Trump
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (6 September) responded positively to US President Donald Trump’s latest comments on India–US relations, stressing that the two nations continue to share a forward-looking and comprehensive strategic partnership.
“Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership,” PM Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
His message came after Trump described India–US ties as a “very special relationship” and called Modi a “great Prime Minister" during a press meet.
Trump also remarked that India and the United States “will always be friends,” even as he criticised New Delhi’s continued energy trade with Russia.
When asked about his Truth Social post about "losing India to China", Trump replied, "I don't think we have".
This comes amid heightened trade tensions between the two countries.
The move drew sharp criticism from New Delhi, which called the duties “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” while underscoring that India’s energy policy is driven by national interest and strategic autonomy.
The reaffirmation of partnership comes at a sensitive time when India is balancing relations with both Russia and the United States in an increasingly polarised global environment.
Pm Modi’s conciliatory tone appears to be an indication of an effort to de-escalate the rhetoric and preserve the broader strategic framework of cooperation that spans defense, technology, energy, and trade.
By publicly acknowledging Trump’s “positive assessment,” New Delhi signaled that it remains committed to deepening ties with Washington despite policy disagreements.
