US President Donald Trump has once again claimed credit for stopping a conflict between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan earlier this year, saying that his use of tariffs helped avert war between the two nations, The Times of India reported.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “If I didn’t have the power of tariffs, you would have at least four of the seven wars raging. I use tariffs to stop wars. If you look at India and Pakistan, they were ready to go at it. Seven planes were shot down. They were ready to go at it. And then nuclear powers. I don’t want to say exactly what I said, but what I said was very effective. They stopped. And that was based on tariffs.”

He remarked that tariffs were crucial for the United States, claiming they had turned the country into a “peacekeeper.”

He further said that the US earned “hundreds of billions of dollars” through tariffs while maintaining peace globally.

This was not the first time the former president made such a statement. At a private dinner with Republican lawmakers at the White House last month, he claimed that his administration had “stopped a lot of wars.” Referring specifically to the India-Pakistan conflict, Trump said both nations, being nuclear powers, were “hitting each other.”

He added that several planes were “shot out of the air,” estimating that “four or five, but I think five jets were shot down.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also clarified in Parliament that no foreign leader had asked India to halt Operation Sindoor.

The tensions between India and Pakistan had intensified after a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on 22 April killed 26 people.

In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor on 7 May, targeting nine major terror hubs inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Indian Air Force later carried out precision strikes on 11 Pakistani airbases and intercepted all retaliatory drone and missile attacks from across the border.
