Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (30 August) held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, China, India Today reported.

The talks come as hefty US tariffs push the two Asian powers toward closer engagement despite differences.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin.

During his bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Xi on China’s successful SCO chairmanship, thanked him for the invitation to visit China and for their meeting, and highlighted "vishwas, samman aur samvedanshilta (trust, respect and sensitivity)" as key to India-China ties.

PM Modi stated that an agreement had been reached between the Special Representatives of India and China regarding border management.

He added that the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra had been resumed, and direct flights between the two countries were also being reinstated.

PM Modi noted that the interests of 2.8 billion people of both nations were linked to their cooperation and that this would contribute to the welfare of all humanity.

"The interests of 2.8 billion people of both countries are linked to our cooperation. This will also pave the way for the welfare of the entire humanity. We are committed to taking our relations forward on the basis of mutual trust, respect and sensitivity," he said.

He emphasised India’s commitment to advancing relations on the basis of mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.

This is the first meeting between Modi and Xi in nearly 10 months. Their previous interaction was during the BRICS summit in Russia's Kazan.

The talks come after a thaw in India-China ties for the first time since the Galwan 2020 clashes.

They carry added weight amid India’s strained relations with the US over President Trump’s tariffs linked to Russian oil imports.

Strengthening bilateral ties is expected to dominate Modi–Xi discussions, while also projecting unity amid the tariff dispute with the US.

Before arriving in Tianjin, PM Modi had said strong ties with China will have a positive impact on regional peace and prosperity, NDTV reported.

"Stable, predictable, and amicable bilateral relations between India and China, the two largest nations on Earth, can have a positive impact on regional and global peace and prosperity," he told Japanese media, calling the India-China ties "crucial for a multi-polar Asia and the world".
