Nepal’s Gen-Z Hails PM Modi’s Leadership Model As Political Turmoil Deepens Amid Deadly Protests In Neighbouring Country

A viral video of a Nepali Gen-Z youth praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi has captured attention amid Nepal’s political turmoil.
The young man told an Indian reporter, “We need a government like Modi here. Now Balen (Balendra Shah) will come and everything will be alright.”
He added, “If we had a leader like Modi here, then Nepal would not have been here; it would have been the world’s top country.”
The remarks come as Nepal reels from violent anti-corruption protests that forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign on Tuesday (9 September).
The youth-led demonstrations, which began as a movement against corruption, nepotism, and systemic failures, turned deadly after police opened fire on unarmed protesters on Monday, killing at least 19 people and injuring over 400. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak also resigned amid the unrest.
Prime Minister Modi, returning from visits to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, expressed “deep anguish” over the bloodshed.
Despite Oli’s resignation, unrest spread across Kathmandu and other cities. Protesters stormed the Parliament, set fire to the Nepali Congress Central Office, and targeted homes of senior leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Bishnu Paudel and former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba.
Tribhuvan International Airport briefly suspended flights due to nearby smoke.
In response, the Nepal Army assumed control of national security, deploying helicopters to evacuate ministers and imposing curfews in several districts.
The army urged citizens to maintain calm and social harmony. Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah also appealed for restraint, emphasizing that public and private property are shared national assets.
