Prime Minister Modi Extends Best Wishes To Interim Nepalese PM Sushila Karki, Reaffirms India’s Support For Nepal's Prosperity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended congratulations to Sushila Karki on Saturday (13 September) after she took charge as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, and assured India’s continued support for the Himalayan nation’s peace and stability.

"I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal," PM Modi wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Former Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court, Sushila Karki, was sworn in on Friay (12 September), marking history as the nation’s first woman Prime Minister.

Her appointment comes after weeks of youth-driven demonstrations calling for accountability, anti-corruption measures, and political reform following a contentious social media ban that sparked nationwide unrest.

The violent protests, which saw at least 51 people dead and more than a thousand injured, ultimately led to toppling of the former PM K P Sharma Oli led government and the Parliament’s dissolution.

Karki, 73, is widely known for her integrity and strength. During her tenure as Chief Justice between 2016 and 2017, she was known for taking a firm stand against corruption.

Her selection is viewed as a consensus choice, acceptable to both protest leaders and the Nepal Army.

Karki’s interim government faces the responsibility of restoring law and order, probing the protest-related violence, and preparing the country for general elections set for 5 March 2026.
