Russian President Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday lauded US President-elect Donald Trump, calling him an experienced and intelligent leader, while expressing concerns about Trump’s safety following several assassination attempts.
In July, Trump sustained injuries to his ear during an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
Another incident occurred in September when a man faced charges for allegedly attempting to assassinate Trump by positioning himself with a rifle at a Florida golf course the US President-elect owns.
Addressing reporters in Kazakhstan after a summit, Putin expressed his shock over the way the US election campaign had been conducted.
Putin criticised what he described as "absolutely uncivilised methods" used against Trump, including multiple assassination attempts.
"By the way, in my opinion, he is not safe now," said Putin, news agency Reuters reported.
Putin, who is himself heavily protected, said he was even more appalled by the criticism directed at Trump's family and children by political opponents during the US election campaign.
Describing such behaviour as "revolting", Putin remarked that even "bandits" in Russia would not stoop to such tactics.
Commenting on the Biden administration's actions, which he described as escalating the Ukraine conflict by enabling Kyiv to strike Russia with Western missiles, Putin speculated that it could be intended to either aid Trump by providing him with an issue to address or complicate his dealings with Moscow.
Regardless, Putin expressed confidence that Trump would "find the solution" and affirmed Moscow’s readiness for dialogue.
