A high-profile Gaza peace summit opened on Monday (13 October) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, with over 20 world leaders attending to push forward a ceasefire and regional stability plan, the Financial Express reported.

The meeting, co-hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and US President Donald Trump, follows Trump’s visit to Israel, where he addressed the Knesset and met families of hostages held during the conflict.

According to Egypt’s presidency, the summit aims “to end the war in Gaza, enhance peace efforts, and ensure long-term stability in the Middle East.” Talks will focus on implementing the next phase of Trump’s 20-point peace plan, including governance in post-war Gaza and the fate of Hamas.

Trump told reporters before departing for Egypt, “The war is over,” expressing confidence in the ceasefire reached last week.

Among confirmed attendees are French President Emmanuel Macron, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, European Council President Antonio Costa, and leaders from Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, Indonesia, Armenia, and Pakistan are also present.

Modi will separately meet Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty later this week.

However, Israel and Iran are notably absent. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that no representatives would attend, while Hamas has chosen to stay out of the summit, citing previous mediation through Egypt and Qatar.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on X that Tehran “cannot engage with counterparts who continue to sanction and threaten us,” referring to US-led strikes on Iranian nuclear sites earlier this year.

The ceasefire, part of Trump’s initial peace plan, includes an exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners scheduled for Monday.
