Former US President Donald Trump was arrested on Tuesday (4 April) after he arrived to surrender at the Manhattan Criminal Court for his arraignment on criminal charges, as he becomes the first president in American history to be criminally prosecuted.

The case comes at a time when Trump was expected to begin his third campaign for the White House on a Republican ticket.

He was indicted on 20 March by a federal grand jury in connection with paying $130,000 in hush money to one Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, before his US Presidential election of 2016 in exchange for her silence.

Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records and doing so to cover another crime of violating campaign finance laws, which constitutes a felony. He was released shortly after the hearing.

US Turning into a ‘Marxist Third World’ Country

Hours before his arraignment, Trump sent an email to his supporters, saying that the US is turning into a “Marxist Third World Country” and claimed that the judicial system in the US is turning into “lawlessness”.

“Our nation is becoming a Marxist Third World Country that criminalizes dissent and imprisons its political opposition. But do not lose hope in America! Resilience is in our blood,” he said in the email.

Speaking at a press conference later from his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, Trump said, “Our country is going to hell. This fake case was brought only to interfere with the upcoming 2024 election and it should be dropped immediately”.

He also slammed the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for being a “George Soros-backed prosecutor”.

The legal problems might just end up solidifying Trump’s position in the Republican Party in the end, at a time when the party was beginning to look at other candidates who would be less polarising.

Trump has already managed to raise $4 million within 24 hours of his indictment and the Republican supporters have once again rallied behind him.

His next in-person hearing is set to be held on 4 December, as per reports.
