Amidst Diplomatic Row With India Maldives President Muizzu Breaks Tradition To Visit China First, Set To Sign Multiple Agreements

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu embarked on his inaugural bilateral visit to China on Sunday (7 January) night, responding to an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping as reported by Hindustan Times.
China and the Maldives are set to solidify their bilateral ties by signing multiple agreements, following discussions between President Xi Jinping and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu during the latter's state visit from 8-12 January according to a report from The Economic Times.
This marks President Muizzu's first official visit to a foreign country since assuming office in November, and it is viewed as a significant diplomatic move amid his perceived pro-China stance.
This diplomatic journey also occurs amid strained relations with India, the Maldives' neighbouring country, and a significant tourism contributor.
President Muizzu, known for his 'Out India' campaign, recently took action against three deputy ministers—Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoon Maajid—suspending them due to derogatory social media comments in response to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promotion of tourism in India's Lakshadweep archipelago.
The Maldives Foreign Ministry responded to the controversial social media posts, stating that such opinions are personal and do not reflect the government's views.
Notable Indians, including actor Akshay Kumar and cricketer Hardik Pandya, expressed dismay at the comments made by the suspended Maldivian officials. Also, a campaign urging Indians to explore their islands gained traction on social media, with hashtags like #ExploreIndianIslands trending.
India, a crucial economic ally, contributes significantly to the Maldivian economy through tourism, with Indian tourists forming the largest group visiting the island nation.
However, relations have been strained since President Muizzu's election in November whose campaign included promises to remove a small contingent of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives.
Muizzu assumed the presidency after defeating the India-friendly incumbent in September.
Over the past decade, India and China have been vying for influence in the Maldives, with the island nation joining China's "Belt and Road" initiative.
An editorial in The Global Times, a state-run Chinese publication, notes that Muizzu's decision to visit China before India breaks from tradition, a move recognised by foreign media outlets and seen as a strategic choice for the Maldives.
