Donald Trump and his allies were indicted in Georgia on Monday (14 August) for allegedly scheming to illegally overturn the 2020 election results.

This is the fourth criminal case against the former US president, with the second one specifically accusing him of trying to subvert the vote.

The indictment by the Fulton County grand jury comes after a two-year investigation that was sparked by a phone call in January 2021.

During the call, the then president Trump suggested that Georgia's Republican secretary of state could assist him “find 11,780 votes” necessary to reverse his narrow loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

In addition to Trump, the indictment also includes other defendants such as Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff, Rudy Giuliani, Trump's personal attorney, and Jeffrey Clark, a Trump administration Justice Department official who supported his efforts to overturn the election in Georgia.

Prior to this indictment, Trump had already been indicted in early August by a federal grand jury, reports Indian Express.

He was charged with conspiring to undermine the 2020 vote and prevent the peaceful transfer of power through a series of lies and unlawful actions. Trump pleaded not guilty in that case.

As the number of indictments against him increases, Donald Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, frequently highlights the fact that he is the only former president to have faced criminal charges.

He is actively campaigning and raising funds based on these circumstances, presenting himself as a target of Democratic prosecutors who are determined to bring him down.
