Former VP Mike Pence Signals 2024 Presidential Run, Says Trump's Actions On Jan 6 'Endangered Me and My Family’

In a clear signal that he is preparing for the 2024 presidential run, former vice president Mike Pence has launched a blistering attack on former president Donald Trump's conduct during the January 6 attack on the Capitol building.

Trump's action that day "endangered me and my family and everyone at the Capitol building…It was clear he decided to be part of the problem," Pence said during an interview with ABC.

When asked whether he will join the 2024 presidential race, Pence said that he and his family are giving "prayerful consideration" to whether he should take the plunge.

Pence added that the U.S would have "better choices in the future" than Trump.

On whether he believes his former boss should serve again as president, Pence responded: "I think that's up to the American people. But I think we'll have better choices in the future. People in this country actually get along pretty well once you get out of politics. And I think they want to see their national leaders start to reflect that same, that same compassion and generosity of spirit. And I think, so in the days ahead, I think there will be better choices."

Though he has not officially announced his entry into the presidential race, Pence has been conducting a series of meeting with donors. He is also releasing a new book in a bid to bolster his credentials for the top office.

Pence has faced attacks from Trump supporters for refusing to bow to their demand of not certifying the results of the 2020 election on the grounds that the election was stolen through fraud. The incumbent U.S vice president is entrusted with the role of certifying the results of the presidential poll.

During the run-up to the violent events that unfolded at Capitol Hill on January 6, 2020, Trump supporters were heard chanting "Hang Mike Pence", with some even erecting gallows in a bid to intimidate Pence.

While lawmakers were barricaded inside the Capitol building fearing attack from angry mobs, Trump had tweeted: "Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution."

Pence's interview comes amid the Republican Party's underwhelming performance in the recent midterm elections. While some pollsters suggested that Republicans would regain comfortable majorities in both houses of Congress, Democrats retained their Senate majority thanks to the win in the battleground state of Nevada.

Pointing to the defeat of several candidates endorsed by the former president, Trump's critics within the Republican party have attributed the subpar performance to divisive rhetoric from his camp.
