India, which is the third largest contributor to the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDF), has contributed $150,000 to UN Democracy Fund (UNDEF) for 2022.

New Delhi has contributed over $32 million to fund since its inception, according to India's Permanent Mission to the UN.

A cheque to this effect was handed over to UN Secretariat on 30 March 2022, India's Permanent Mission to the UN said in a statement.

India is a founding partner of the UN Democracy Fund (UNDEF), a fund that supports projects that strengthen the voice of civil society, promote human rights, and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes, the statement said.

UNDEF is an effective instrument for the promotion of democratic values and processes.

The fund presently supports projects that strengthen the voice of civil society, promote human rights, and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes.

India plays a prominent role in the UNDEF as a long-standing member of the Advisory Board, its apex governing body.

"Since its inception, India has contributed over $32 million to the Fund and remains its third-largest contributor, underscoring India’s deep commitment to democratic values," the statement said.

"India acknowledges that sustained support for UNDEF is particularly important in this crucial time for democracy efforts worldwide," it added.

India also expressed steadfast support for UNDEF as it plays a distinct role in complementing other UN efforts to strengthen democratic governance around the world.
