Dear reader,
When Shivaji Maharaj was crowned the Chhatrapati in June 1674, historians say that no one living had memory of a Hindu coronation.
Indeed, it was taken as natural that the ultimate political authority, Mughal, or of the Deccan Sultanates, would be Islamic. Valiant and brave Hindus could be high-ranking courtiers and jagirdars and mansabdars, but they could not be king. At best, the state was indifferent to Hindus. At worst, it harassed them.
In the centuries preceding Shivaji Maharaj, various intellectual responses to Islamic colonisation had emerged. Many heroic military victories had also been won. But it was only Shivaji who combined the intellectual with the material and established a robust Hindu state in the teeth of Islamic imperialism.
Indeed, one can say that India’s freedom struggle didn’t begin in the 19th Century but in the 17th. With his Hindavi Swarajya, Shivaji Maharaj was ‘decolonising’ his people a full two centuries before the first recorded usage of the word “decolonisation”.
And this month, at Swarajya, we are celebrating 350 years of Swarajya.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
