In another setback for Trinamool Congress (TMC) , another sitting MLA has quit the party days ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to the state, reports Hindustan Times.
TMC MLA Jitendra Tiwari resigned from the primary membership of the party as well as the post of the chairman of the Board of Administrators of the Asansol Municipal Corporation. He said, "If I am not allowed to work, what will I do with the post? So, I resigned." He said that there was no point in continuing in the TMC.
This gains significance as it came within 24 hours of senior TMC member Suvendu Adhikari resigning from the party. Adhikari was a sitting minister in CM Banerjee's government until a few days ago. This has come as a big jolt for the TMC given West Bengal is set to undergo Assembly elections next year.
According to the report, Tiwari's resignation from the TMC's primary membership only gives credence to the speculative reports, which emerged following Adhikari's resignation, suggesting that several leaders of CM Banerjee led party are set to switch sides and join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Meanwhile, CM Banerjee has alleged that the BJP is trying to convince TMC members to exit and join the "saffron camp".
