India’s first e-waste recycling unit will be set up in Bengaluru, said Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers Ananth Kumar according to a report in Vijayavani.

The unit is likely to be ready in four months and is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, he is reported to have said.

The country’s e-waste generation is on the rise, and estimated to reach 52 lakh tonnes in 2020, indicating a concurrent increase in e-waste recycling units is also required, he said reported The Times of India.

According to a study by Assocham and KPMG, India was ranked among the top five countries in e-waste generation and estimates suggest that the country generates 1.85 million tonnes of e-waste annually. The study further states that computers comprised 70 per cent of the total e-waste and telecommunication equipment was estimated to be 12 per cent. Bengaluru ranks third behind Mumbai and Delhi in the generation of e-waste, the report stated further.
